Jefferson County is participating in the NYS Septic System Replacement Program. The purpose of this fund is to replace existing cesspools and septic systems that have significant and quantifiable environmental and/or public health impacts on groundwater used for drinking water or on a threatened or impaired waterbody.
In Jefferson County, Funding Priority Geographic Areas identified for this program include: Moon Lake, Hyde Lake, Indian River, St. Lawrence River, Guffin Bay, Hart Brook, Oswegatchie River, Pleasant Lake Tributaries, Skinner Creek, and West Creek.
Under the most recent funding, eligible property owners can be reimbursed 50 percent of eligible costs up to $10,000 for the installation of a conventional system, or up to 75 percent of eligible costs up to $25,000 for the installation of an enhanced septic system.
