Adopt a Highway

Adopt-a-Highway

Across the nation and throughout New York State, many community groups are stepping up to help keep roadways clean by participating in "Adopt-a-Highway" programs. By taking responsibility for sections of roadway, these volunteers help reduce litter while taking pride in enhancing the appearance of their communities for both residents and visitors.

We encourage participation from individuals, families, businesses, and wide range of organizations. Such as civic groups, service clubs, youth organizations, schools, religious groups, and neighborhood associations to adopt a portion of a county highway. For safety reasons, all participants must be at least 12 years old. Anyone between the ages of 12 and 18 must be supervised, with a minimum ratio of one adult to every six minors. In addition, all volunteers are required to carry liability insurance.

Along with personal satisfaction of contributing to the community, participating groups will be recognized with a roadside sign acknowledging their efforts. Organizations are asked to commit to maintaining their adopted roadway for a set period, during which they will perform litter cleanups multiple times each year.
